Ootacamund or Ooty as we know it today is a place magical enough to capture every traveller’s heart. Situated in the state of Tamil Nadu, Ooty is also known as Udhakamandala. Udhakamandala in the local language means ‘house in the mountains’ and ‘water abode’ in Sanskrit. Resting at a height of 7,347 feet above the sea level, the Madras Presidency used to regard Ooty as their summer headquarters.

Places to visit

Ooty Lake
This is a large lake surrounded by Eucalyptus trees. Numerous streams come through the hills to join this lake. This lake is filled with numerous water birds from the Nilgiri mountain ranges. This has become a popular picnicking spot and offers boating facilities for the tourists.
Rose Garden
Vast garden with mesmerizing fragrant rose flowers are an attractive place to watch. During the season time, flower shows are conducted in this garden. Visitors can buy rose saplings for their garden or gifting it.
Nilgiri Mountain Railway
This is a toy train that will take you by the mist and fog filled forests, bridges, and dark tunnels. It’s a 46-kilometer long journey from Mettupalayam to Ooty. It is a 5 hour exciting trip through tea estates, waterfalls, steep hills, about 250 bridges, and 15 tunnels.
Botanical Garden
The lush green botanical garden spread over 22 hectares is a wonderful place to visit. The garden contains over 650 species of flowers and trees. The fossil tree in the garden is believed to be 20 million years old.
Emerald Lake
In the Emerald village 22 km away from the Ooty town, lies Emerald lake which is also a part of the Silent valley national park. This place is less crowded and is ideal for nature lovers. The deep blue lake covered by wonderful flora and fauna is home to exotic birds.
Kalhatti Falls
This fall is located nearby Veerabhadreshwara temple, making it ideal for those people seeking spirituality and serenity. This is surrounded by dense forest where you can also go for trekking. Droog Fort, Lamb’s Rock, Simi’s Park, Catherine falls, etc. are other nearby attractions.
Avalanche Lake
The lake got this name as it was formed naturally in the year 1823 due to a massive landslide. It is located 28 km away from Ooty in the Nilgiris. The lake is encircled by large mountains with many narrow waterfalls falling down from them and dense forest surrounding them all.
Doddabetta peak
The top of this peak is 8606 feet high from the sea level. This is the highest point in South India. The peak 10 km away from Ooty provides a breathtaking view of the Nilgiris.
Pykara waterfalls and Lake
This is a cascading waterfall amid pine trees and a wonderful lake, 20 km away from Ooty. This is a favorite location for both honeymoon couples and adventure lovers. You can enjoy speedboat rides on the lake.
Stone house
For history lovers, you have an ancient monument made in 1822. This is the first bungalow of Ooty. This bungalow has amazing architecture and was built by John Sullivan.

Trekking
Ooty presents many exceptional trails for the trekking lovers. While trekking in Nilgiri hills you can spot Langur, deer, and even elephants roaming in the forests.
Boating

Best Time to Visit

Winter (November- February)
January and February are the coldest months in Ooty. During this season the nights are super chilling and the days are almost pleasant with a frequent cool breeze making it ideal for sightseeing. The temperature in Ooty sometimes goes below 5°C. A lot of couples come for their honeymoon to Ooty in this season.
Summer (March-May)
In summer the average temperature will be around a maximum of 20°C. Pleasant climate in this season make the activities and sightseeing easy and wonderful. And even in the summer season, the night is cool in Ooty.
Monsoon (June- September)

How To Reach

Air
Coimbatore airport, which is 88 kilometers away is the nearest domestic airport to Ooty. International tourists can book tickets to Bangalore airport known as Kempegowda International airport, which is approximately 300 km away. Taxi and bus to Ooty are easily available from both these airports.
Train
40 kilometers away from Ooty is Mettupalayam which is the nearest railhead. From Bangalore, Mysore, Chennai, and other nearby major cities you can get a train to Mettupalayam. Once you reach Mettupalayam you can hire a taxi or board on a bus to Ooty.
Road
You can get private and state transport buses to Ooty easily from all the major cities like Bangalore, Mysore, Chennai, etc. Or, you can self-drive through the well-maintained state highways.
